Reprintable Article – Getting With The Program

Summary:
It’s hard to get where you want to go if you don’t have a plan for how to get there. A properly written workout program is an essential part of any fitness plan.

Getting With The Program
by Jackie Burgmann, author of “Hot at Home” – The Transformation Solution for People Who Hate The Gym

If you’re all ramped up to get fit and have yourself set up with a home gym (or maybe a gym membership) and you’re heading there now for your workout, before you get started, first ask yourself one very important question.

What’s your plan once you’re actually in your workout clothes and standing in front of the equipment?

Do you have a plan?

In other words, do you have a proper program written and printed out that has your individual goals in mind that you can follow along with? Or are you going to just haphazardly wander around choosing exercises you know or have heard about and just do all those ones?

If you want to go somewhere, the best thing you can do is make sure you have a plan to get there.

Otherwise, HOW will you get where you want to go if you don’t have a plan figured out for how to get there?

You might get lucky and land where you want to go by accident, but think of it this way:

Would you get in your car to go somewhere new without at least knowing the address? Or getting proper directions.

Would you expect to just drive around aimlessly and eventually just wind up where you intended to go by luck? No.

If you are serious about getting in shape the very first thing you need is a well-written program that will hit all your muscle groups and keep you well balanced.

Jumping into a new fitness plan without a properly written program can cause problems down the line like an unbalanced body (which can cause muscle strains or even injury).

Consider what will happen if you’re hammering away at your biceps, chest and back but not your legs.

You’ll wind up looking like that guy you see on the beach every summer with the fantastic upper body and little chicken legs.

And you can wind up extremely out of balance aesthetically if you’re only working the ‘mirror’ muscles (in other words, the muscles you can see in the mirror, chest, shoulders, quadriceps) but neglecting the muscle groups behind you (your back, hamstrings, calves).

You might look great in the mirror but to the rest of us who can see all of you, you’re looking a bit ‘out of whack’… and you could be causing yourself to become hunchbacked as well by overworking your chest and not working your back.

If you can’t figure out how to write an appropriate program for yourself (and most newcomers to the fitness game shouldn’t be expected to), the first thing to do is either hire a Personal Trainer to write you a program with your individual needs in mind (which can be expensive), or pick up a great workout program online (like Hot at Home, of course) that promises the kinds of results you’re specifically looking for (ie. fat loss, muscle building, brute strength, or sports performance for the sport you’re training for).

Most online programs are extremely affordable when you compare the cost to the cost of hiring a trainer even for one session.

There are tons of fitness eBooks out there, and a few of them are fantastic for setting you on the right path and most even include terrific starting out programs you can follow.

A lot of these eBooks even include beginner, intermediate and advanced programs so you don’t have to worry about learning how to write programs for yourself at all as you get stronger and more advanced.

One word of caution with eBooks that don’t include explicit pictures and explanations about how to do each exercise: Make sure you watch lots of videos on the internet, so that you can feel secure knowing you are performing the exercises with correct form and posture.

You don’t want to get injured if you’re working out on your own and don’t have someone watching over you to make sure your form is correct.

However, if you do have the budget to hire a Personal Trainer that you can develop a relationship with, they will not only write you a program but will supervise you as you train to make sure you are performing the exercises correctly (which can prevent injury as well as making sure you’re exercising to your maximum potential and achieving the best results).

If you happen to be a member at a gym they probably have one or two Personal Trainers on staff, and if you aren’t a gym member, there are lots of self-employed trainers out there, they’re not hard to find.

With a properly written program, whether you choose to get one from a Personal Trainer or a reputable online resource like “Hot at Home”, you’ll have a plan to get you from where you are now, to where you want to go.

And that’s what’s called “Getting With The Program”.
